Tightly packed sheets of cells that cover organs, outer surfaces, line hollow organs, vessels, and body cavities.
Function: Protection, absorption, and secretion -In the skin protects body form injury, UV light, water loss, etc. -Line blood vessels and intestines, absorb nutrients and water
Endocrine- Secrete hormones into bloodstream Exocrine- Secrete stuff into hollow organs, ducts, or onto skin
Proteins which anchor cells to each other and allow interaction Tight- Form tightly between the plasma membranes of nearby cells Adhesion- Filaments that join cells to each other Gap- When 2 nearby plasma membranes are joined via a channel of protein
Bind organs and tissues to each other, each composed of cells and a specialized matrix. Nervous- Neurons conduct electrical impulses Loose- Most common in animals, holds organs in place, acts as padding under skin, cells= fibroblasts; synthesize and secrete proteins into matrix Adipose- Fat tissue, insulates and protects organs (kidneys and heart) ^Adipocytes- Specialized for synthesis and storage of energy reserves of fat
Connective Tissue Cont.
Blood- liquid matrix, circulates throughout the body, carries away waste Dense Fibrous- Regular; forms the tendons and ligaments, Irregular; dermis Cartilage- Composed of chondrocytes, flexibility for ears and nose Bones- Makeup skeleton and are connected at the joints, bone cells grow and divide under physical stress
Made up of muscle fibers (actin and myosin) that cause the cells to contract when signaled by nerve cells. Voluntary: walking Involuntary: beating of the heart
3 Types of Muscle Tissue
Cardiac- Only in the wall of the heart, produces heartbeat, do not reproduce Skeletal- In muscles attached to bone and produces all body movements in relation to each other Smooth- Form internal organs, blood vessels, and the digestive sys.
Positive- Product of the process intensifies the process (childbirth) Negative- Product of a process inhibits the process (thermoregulation) Thermoregulation- Reg. of body temperature
5 Types of Membranes
Mucous- Line tubes of digestive, respiratory, reproductive, and urinary sys. Serous- Lines abdomen Pleural- Line thoraic cavity and lungs Cutaneous- Forms hard, dry skin Meningeal- Covers the brain and spinal cord Synovial- Lubricate joints; knees
Ability to maintain relatively constant internal conditions under extreme situations; cells, tissues, and organs contribute to stability
Organs and Organ Systems
Digestive Urinary Respiratory Skeletal Muscular Integumentary- Hair, nails, skin; protects body from injury, envron, etc. Cardiovascular- Heart Endocrine- Thyroid, etc. ; secretes hormones Nervous- Brain Lymphatic & Immune- Thymus, spleen; protects against infections Reproductive
