Power: The ability to get others to do what you want. Government: System or organization for exercising authority over people. Expected to have monopoly on legitimate coercion and violence. It has the ultimate authority within society. Rules: Directives that specify how power and resources are distributed. Institution: Organization that distributes power and rules (senate, congress, etc) Economics: Production and distribution of a society?s material resources and services. Both politics and economics focus on distribution of society?s resources. Economic Systems Capitalism: Market determines production, price and distribution. Socialist Democracy: State determines production, price and distribution. Property is government owned. Social Democracy: Hybrid of capitalism and socialism. Systems of Government Authoritarian Monarchy: King or Queen rule with total power Theocracy: Government claims authority by divine right. Fascism: Glory of the State above all (Nazi Germany) Oligarchy: Ruled by small groups of elite. Totalitarian: Absolute control by State (N. Korea) Non Authoritarian Anarchy: No government control Democracy People Adam Smith (Scotland): Wrote ?Wealth of Nations.? Idea of invisible hand: market will balance itself. Karl Marx: Founder of Socialism. Wrote ?Communist Manifesto?. Incorrectly attributed at times to past governments ? believed democracy and socialism could exist.
