AMA contracted with the Carnegie Foundation to study the quality of medical education. In 1910, Abraham Flexner conducted a comprehensive study of all medical schools in the U.S. and Canada, His recommendation was to reduce the number of medical schools to 31 and medical education be subjected to formal regulation.
