How do Cognitive Theorists explain abnormal functioning?
People make assumptions and adopt attitudes that are disturbing and inaccurate. They also adopt illogical thinking processes that arrive at self-defeating conclusions. Ex: overgeneralization.
What do cognitive therapies assume?
That most people can overcome their problems by developing new, more functional ways of thinking.
Beck's approach, called cognitive therapy, claims that
therapists help clients recognize the negative thoughts, biased interruptions, and errors in logic that dominate their thinking and cause their depressions. They also guide clients to apply new ways of thinking.
