1. sharp filiform papillae: no taste buds, mechanical and not involved in gustation
2. rounded fungiform papillae: often have taste buds
3. vallate papillae: 8-12, circular-shaped row just in front of the sulcus terminalis of the back part of tongue 4. foliate: paired oval papillae of lateral aspect of posterior part of the tongue (may not be in humans)
