A device that performs data manipulation and transformation functions.
A set of stored instructions for performing a specific task, such as calculating payroll.
Can execute many different instructions in many different sequences or combinations.
Designed to perform only one specific task.
A program in which different sets of instructions are applied to different data values.
Part of a group of logic instructions, implying a relationship to intelligent decision making behavior.
Central Processing Unit (CPU)
A general-purpose processor that executes instructions and controls all data movement in the computer system.
The internal communication channel connecting all hardware devices. The main channel for moving data and instructions to and from hardware components, and its capacity is a critical factor in computer performance.
Arithmetic Logic Unit (ALU)
Contains electrical circuits that carry out each instruction.
A few internal storage locations that are each capable of holding a single instruction or data item. Registers store data or instructions that are needed immediately or frequently.
Also referred to as main memory, or simply memory. A running program moves instructions and data continually between main memory and the CPU.
Random Access Memory (RAM)
The main memory that is implement with silicon-based semiconductor devices.
Composed of high-capacity nonvolatile storage devices that hold programs not currently running, data not needed by current running programs, and data needed by currently running programs that doesn't fit in available primary storage.
A computer system designed to meet a single user's information processing needs.
A full-featured microcomputer with an integrated display and a battery; a laptop rivals traditional microcomputer in power and cost.
A laptop computer that emphasizes small size, reduced weight, low cost, and wireless networking and is capable of performing only light-duty tasks.
Personal Digital Computer
A handheld computer, usually integrated with a cell phone, thatsupports light-duty tasks.
Mid-range Computer (Microcomputer)
Designed to provide information processing for multiple users and run many application programs simultaneously.
Handles the information-processing needs of a large number of users and applications.
Designed for one purpose-rapid mathematical computation.
A computer system that manages shared resources, such as file system, databases, Web sites, printers, and high speed CPU'S, and allows users to access these resources over a local or wide area network.
A technique that divides a single computer's capacity among multiple virtual machines.
Any arrangement of multiple computers used to support specific services or applications
A group of similar or identical computers, connected by a high-speed network, that cooperate to provide services or run a single application.
A circuit board that contains most of a server computer, a specialized cluster.
A group of dissimilar computer systems, connected by a high-speed network, that cooperate to perform services or execute a common application.
