Variable

A letter used to represent a number or numbers

Evaluate

To find a final number that an expression is equal to.

Simplify

To write an expression as simply as possible by combining terms, multiplying or dividing.

Like Terms

Two or more terms that have the same variable to the same exponent.

Distributive Property

If a, b and c are real numbers

a(b + c) = ab + ac

a(b - c) = ab - ac

a(b + c) = ab + ac

a(b - c) = ab - ac

Commutative Property

If a and b are real numbers

a + b = b + a

a • b = b • a

a + b = b + a

a • b = b • a

Associative Property

If a, b and c are real numbers

a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c

a• (b • c) = (a • b) • c

a + (b + c) = (a + b) + c

a• (b • c) = (a • b) • c

Order of Operations

A set order in which to perform operations so everyone will get the same solution.
