Trade and/or Sex for money
For men, it was a mark of status. People who had money could buy them.
It was a way for women to have sex with other people other than their husbands. Usually it occured after their husbands had died.
Men used it to have more children for their family when their wife couldn't produce a son.
Offspring belong to the wife of the man, rather than the biological mother.
Daughters were also sold off early, for trade or money.

- Moral beings: act on ideal grounds, uphold virtue against human error (including evil rulers), reaffirm and conserve traditional policy
- Nobles: proper behavior according to status, Confucian man >superior man > noble man. Stressed by legalist schools, behave this way and gave himself moral status and prestige
Way of thought and life, Ethics of living, cosmic order, human society has human hierarchy, filial piety (order that father is wiser than son, man is to wife), man is perfectible education makes the person good or bad, education is something thatcan make someone stronger
It was an expected way for an individual to behave in order to keep China stable. Men were perfectible. Noble man would receive power if he behaved correctly, and people will listen if he acts proper.
