Roosevelts policy during election of 1912. Central issues: government protection of property rights and human welfare. Woman suffrage, 8 hour workday, prohibition of child labor, strict corporate regulation, minimum wage for woman.
Andrew Johnson wanted to bring the south back to the north with minimal changes to southern life. Returned property to southerners if they pledged loyalty to the union and gave presidential pardons. Former confederates gained political power.
Black Codes 1866
Rights granted: legally marry other blacks, can sue and be sued, purchase property.
Rights denied: cant vote, hold office, serve on juries, couldn't marry whites, can't dictate own terms of labor.
Goals to transform southern society, punish former confeds, make former slaves citizens.
Freedmens bureau 1865
When it was created it provided food, clothing, and fuel to former slaves and poor whites. After being renewed despite Jonson's veto it mediated disputes between blacks and whites, legalized marriages, and educated former slaves.
Defined national citizenship to slaves, prohibited violating rights of citizens, disallowed former confederates to hold office.
