The starting age for steroid use is a lot sooner than you would think, According to Anabolicmall.com, 5.4% of all middle school students were reported as using steroids. II. The typical users of steroids tend to be people around our age including high school and college athletes and in the modeling profession to improve body image. III. Steroids are taken to build muscle, enhance performance, and improve appearance. There are an abundance of people who take steroids either knowingly or unknowingly depending on the drug they are taking. IV. Steroids have been around for a long time and have given doctors a chance to identify the majority of the pros and cons of steroids use, but there are still some unknowns out there about the long-term effects of using them. V. I will be talking about how steroids are used, medical uses for steroids, and some of the side effects that steroids can cause. Transition: Now that we know the general concept of what steroids are used for, I am going to go more in depth of how they are used and what side effects can occur. Body: I. There are a number of different ways that users can take steroids. A. First, according to the Greater Dallas Council on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, steroids can be administered by injection, by mouth in a tablet form, and by gels or patches applied to the skin. B. Second, most users rely on hearsay or gossip to determine safe dosages to take. For example from the Texas Commission on Alcohol and Drug Abuse, individuals that abuse steroids take megadoses of hundreds of milligrams per day, whereas doctors prescribe 1-5 milligrams per day for legitimate medical reasons. 1. Most users take steroids in cycles of 6-12 weeks at a time. 2. Once these periods are over they take a break from them for a while because they don’t want to build up a tolerance for them. C. Finally, the doses used mainly determines on the activity that is being performed such as, athletics and body building, which could last for a couple of days to a couple of months. Transition: Now that you know how they are taken and how much taken is determined, I am going to explain the medical uses for steroids. II. There are a number of ways that steroids are used for legitimate medical purposes. A. According to Staff, the author of the Steroids Fast Facts from the Do It Now Foundation, steroids are used medically to rebuild tissues weakened by injury or disease, to assist in regaining weight after illness, and to aid recovery from breast cancer and osteoporosis. B. Next, because of some negative side effects, steroids have been classified as a controlled substance which means there are severe penalties for trafficking them, possession, and use of them without medical consent. 1. This is why most sports and the International Olympic Committee test athletes for steroid use before competition. 2. For example, all the baseball players that have been in the news constantly for this issue. C. Finally, veterinarians administer steroids to animals for purposes such as to promote feed efficiency, weight gain, and their hair coat. Transition: After learning about how they are used for medical purposes we must now learn about the side effects of taking steroids. III. There are multiple side effects that can occur from using steroids. A. First, according to the Associated Content Health and Fitness, acne and increased hair loss are among the less serious effects of steroid use. B. Second, there has been evidence that steroid abuse can affect the immune system, leading to the decreased effectiveness of the defense system. 1. Stunted growth, continuous headaches, bone pain, and nausea can also occur from the abuse of steroids. 2. Unexpected side effect is that steroid use can also weaken the tendons putting users at risk of serious injury. C. Third, it is also known to cause aggressive behavior due to the increase of the testosterone level being increased by the steroid. D. Finally, The long-term, high-dose effects of steroid use are largely unknown. Conclusion: I. Now we know how steroids are taken, what their purposes are, and the side effects of taking them. II. You know that steroids can be used negatively and positively, the different ways that they can be taken and administered and what can happen if you are abusing them. III. So now when you hear about athletes getting penalized for using steroids you now know why. IV.
