History 262: April 8, 2009 Notes of lecture The Truman doctrine (1947), ?Containment? and The iron curtain; Division of Germany: occupation zones, between US/France/UK/Soviet The Division of Berlin June 12 1948, highways into Berlin (W) were closed. Soviets stepped in to take control of West Berlin. UK used a massive airlift to bring in supplies to the city. 11 months long until Russian decided to lift the blockade. Wall between Berlin?s east and west to stop migration. ?The Berlin Wall? a great symbol of the cold war. Rivalry between soviets and US expanded. Threat of communist takeover. US intervened in many instances. Soviets supported national revelations and colonial revolutions. The Korean War?38th parallel Brought the US into the fight, the American force pushed North Korea back up over the 38 parallel. Success of this, concerned the Chinese that US may take over China as well. (n.border 0f N. Korea. General Douglas McArthur argued and invasion of China was needed. Pres. Disagreed. The Chinese Government sends Chinese troops to Korea to fight for Communism as well. Korean war became forgotten in America. Not as remembered as WWII and Vietnam. 36000 dead from this war, 8000 missing and several more injured. There territory was damaged from the war, killing Korean civilians. Large combat losses. Still North and South Korea is divided. The Global significance of the cold war. Soviet/ American Rivalry played out in selecting potencial enemies or ??Proxy wars? Limits on total world war, or nuclear war. Cuban Missle crisis in Oct, 1962 The Bay of Pigs(April 1961) Cuban Missile Crisis (Oct 1962) Lead upper and middle class Cuban to migrate to the US. Took control of American owned oil and fuel on Cuban land, even banana plantations. Us enforced embargos on Cuba that are still in place today. Operation mongoose: to rid Castro of Power. Goal of president Kenedy. He was famous for his love of Cigars. He loved Baseball. Several plans to have him killed. Ironically Kennedy was assassinated shortly afterward. Assassination schemes. Bay of pigs, invasion of Cuba to overtake Castro. After invasion was set in motion, Kennedy?s ?Plausible deniability? to deny they helped with the invasion. Kennedy pulled the plug on US Air support on the invasion. Leaving the ground troops to be locked up by the Cubans. Duck and Cover an idealized fallout shelter from the 1950?s
