-coliform:gram negative rod(bacillus) that ferments lactose to produce gas CO2
-enteric:in gastrointestinal tract
stool tool: E. coli comes out of feces. When testing water only look for E. Coli it mostly gets into water by human feces. If E. Coli is there other organisms can be in there
-Strains:over 150 strains(serovars)
-most are not ifectious
-Most are opportunistic:normally not causing a problem(24% of nosocomial infections)
Some pathogenic: Enterotxigenic: Produce exotoxin(ETEC:Enterotoxigenic Escherichia Coli)
-LT:heat labile(destroyed by heat)
-ST:heat stabile(not destryoed by heat) both causes cells to release alot of water)
LT and ST are very similar to cholera
Enteroinvasive: can produce shiga toxin->had some sort of conjugation with shigella to get the plasmids->can cause hemorrhagic bleeding Enterohemorragic E.Coli very prevalent responsible for bleeding and death
-opportunistic wherever it gets in it will cause an infection
-Cystic:UTI involves bladder more common in females because of shorter urethra. E. Coli is responsible is responsible for 85% of uncomplicated cases of cystitis. Uncomplicated means:no predisposing factors such as atibiotics, no instrumentation and no obstruction
-Epidemic Diarrhea: also called summer diarrhea and infantil diarrhea. Caused by enteropathogenic strain, such as E. oli 0157:H7<--major cause
-very easily spread
-Appendicitis: organism twists around
-Kebsiella Pneumoniae: Gram negative rod enteric(in intestinal tract)
-organism has a capsule
-leaves by way of feces
