Intro to Fiction Lecture 004, Tuesday, January 20, 2009 ? Mr. Collins use of words is both eloquent & too overpowering. ? Pg. 109, bottom?Mr. Collins is actually using manners and apologizing! Wow. ? Charlotte doesn?t want Lizzy to be shocked that her & Mr. Collins are getting married so she tells him to be quiet on the subject matter. And he abides. ? Jane starts missing Mr. Bingley, when will he come back? ? Austen doesn?t mind getting into Charlotte?s head. See bottom page 117, starting with ?Charlotte herself?? ? Pg. 120: strange scenario for Charlotte when she tells Lizzy?she?s afraid of Lizzy?s drop of respect ? Is Austen condemning Charlotte? [tone=authors attitude]; Well, Austen seems to be giving both sides ? FUTURE ESSAY QUESTION: Is Lizzy a hero? ? Jane gives everyone the benefit of the doubt & doesn?t believe everything Mr. Wickham says about Mr. Darcy ? Ruining Jane?s marriage and Mr. Wickham?s fortune is what Lizzy accuses Mr. Darcy of ? Lady Catherine de Bourgh is Mr. Darcy?s aunt, and she is quite obnoxious and rude ? Mr. Darcy doesn?t like Mr. Bingley (his good friend) & Jane dating because he wants to protect his friend, even though he knows he?s in love with her. Mr. Darcy just doesn?t see Jane?s affection for him. ? Inconsistencies: if Darcy objects to Jane marrying BINgley because Bingley is very high up, then why is he falling in love with Elizabeth? Also, Mr. Darcy doesn?t even tell Mr. Bingley that Jane is interested. He is less willing to show interest in Lizzy than Jane & Bingley, however. ? Lizzy doesn?t show Jane the letter from Mr. Darcy because she?s afraid Jane will be hurt by what it says, regarding her. ? The title: PRIDE AND PREJUDICE. There is prejudice where Mr. Darcy first determines he?s too haughty to dance with any of the girls at the first dance. ? Elizabeth is wrapped around Mr. Wickham ? What?s the real clencher in the letter of Mr. Darcy to Lizzy regarding Mr. Wickham? Where Mr. Darcy says, ask my cousin Fitzwilliam. This way Elizabeth is more convinced that Mr. Darcy is telling the truth, if he?s willing to refer someone else for the true answer.
