Social Science Research Methods Studying Human Behavior ? General steps 1. Research question 2. Use theory to generate plausible answers 3. State a hypothesis (testable prediction) 4. Develop operational definition 5. Select participant(s) 6. Test hypothesis by gathering data 7. Draw conclusions based on data Research Methods ? Non experimental ? Naturalistic observation ? Watch and record behavior in natural environment ? Good for describing, not explaining ? Surveys ? Question people via paper, computer, or interview ? Somestimes the only way to get data ? Correlational study ? Collect data on 2 or more variables ? See how variables are related by calculating correlation coefficient ? Correlation = a number from -1 to +1 ? Sign tells how variables are related ? Positive = as on variable increases, so does the other ? Negative = as one variable increases, the other decreases ? Numbers tell how strongly they are related ? +1 = strongest positive ? -1 = strongest negative ? 0 = no relationship
