In the 9th circle of hell, body still on Earth b/c he betrayed his guests (soul goes straight to Hell), stuck in the ice.
→ Dante promises to remove the ice from his face if he tells him who he is, and after he does, he doesn’t remove the ice.
→ Shows Dante’s capability deceit (ironically the deceit of a deceiver)the two worst sins in hell, within the 9th circle, harm and deceit
Beatrice (The Inferno)
Resident of Heaven, loves Dante, tasks Virgil with taking Dante through Hell. Uses the idea of fame to motivate Virgil
→says he is masterful with his words and he can use those skills to gain fame in heaven and earth
Bocca (The Inferno)
Was a traitor to Rome, circle 9.2
→ Dante Walks by him and he accidentally kicks him in the face, he leans down to apologize, sees that it’s Bocca, and curses him tearing out some of his hair.
→ This showed that Dante in the 9th circle was doing the second worst possible thing that he could have done- harm someone on purpose.
Brunetto (The Inferno)
mentor of Dante, circle 7.3, praises Dante for all that he is doing and lifts him up for all of his fame. Dante credits him with teaching him how to be famous and “eternal” on earth.

Catalano (The Inferno)
one of the Jovial Friars, circle 8.4, cursed with crying down his buttcheeks. He asks Dante for pity, and Dante gives it to him. Later he makes Virgil look like a dumbass for trusting a demon because it is common knowledge that demons are liars
→ When Dante sees Catalano in circle 8.4, Dante shows pity
→ Goes against divine judgement
Farinata (The Inferno)
A Ghibelline political leader from Dante’s era who resides among the Heretics in the Sixth Circle of Hell. Farinata is doomed to continue his intense obsession with Florentine politics, which he is now helpless to affect.
