describes a situation in which neither allele may be completely dominant, so a heterozygous genotype produces an intermediate phenotype
ex. red and white flowers = pink; dosage dependence; uses different letters
describes a situation in which more than one allele may specify a particular substance that gets expressed by heterozygous genotype
ex. human ABO blood types (see lecture book)
single gene affects more than one trait
allele responsible for albinism also tends to cause crossed eyes
different in males and females and determine our sex
ex. genotype XX - female phenotype
genotype XY - male phenotype
any genes carried on non-homologous portion of X chromosome
human sex chormosomes are not homologous because Y chromosome is shorter and shaped differently than X chromosome
Have only one copy of an X-linked gene, so they express whatever trait is controlled by allele they have for that gene
recessive allele- cannot be masked so there is a 50% chance of exhibiting trait
only express a recessive sex-linked trait if they carry 2 copies of X-linked recessive allele
only a 25% chance of exhibiting trait
heterozygous females- "carriers", they possess 1 recessive allele, but express dominant trait
carrier = genotype
passed from father to his daughter, who becomes a carrier
Inherited by daughter= only if her father has trait and her mother is at least a carrier
