Steps to Solve a Linear Equation

ax+b=0

1. Simplify the algebraic expression on each side by removing grouping symbols and combining like terms.

2. Collect all the variable terms on one side and all the numbers, or constant terms, on the other side.

3. Isolate the variable and solve.

4. Check the proposed solution in the original equation.

solving a linear equation involving fractions

remove fractions from the equation- multiply both sides of the equation by the Least Common Denominator of any fractions in the equation

Solving a Rational Equation

avoid any values of the variable that make a denominator 0

if the solution would make the denominator 0 then there is no solution to the equation

Types of Equations

identity- an equation that is true for all real numbers for which both sides are defined

conditional equation- an equation that is not an identity but that is true for at least one real number

inconsistent equation- an equation that is not true for any real number

strategy for solving word problems

1. Let x represent one of the unknown quantities.

2. Represent other unknown quantities in terms of x.

3. Write an equation in x that models the conditions.

4. Solve the equation and answer the question.

5. Check the proposed solution in the original

wording of the problem.

Solving a formula for a variable

rewrite the formula so that the variable is isolated on one side of the equation.

complex numbers

the standard form of a complex number

operations on complex numbers
