The choir is an illusionistic space, taking the painting of the Trinity by Masaccio in the church of S M Novella in Florence to yet another scale and level of experience. In 1492, Duke Ludovico Sforza ordered that the apse and transepts of the Church of Santa Maria delle Grazie be rebuilt. Although there is no documentation to prove it, the construction is universally attributed to Bramante under the influence of Leonardo da Vinci who was working at the court of the Sforzas at the time. The church was a Gothic structure to which Bramante added a classicizing domed crossing with apsidal transepts and a square choir that also terminated in an apse.
