November 17, 2009Psychology of Adolescent Maternal employment and adolescent development Prevalence majority of mothers today work outside of home began about 35 years ago started to help support family during recessionwhy do women/mothers want to work outside the home not just to help family economically enjoy what they do sense of accomplishment part of what our identity is about prevailing view at one time was to support the family, cause they had towhy is maternal employment an important issue change in family structure less time with children high percentage of mothers feeling guilty about spending less time with children conflicted for being away from homemore responsibility taken on by adolescent more responsibility for children and adolescentearly research focused on negative focused on mom is gone, what happens to the kids, attachment recent research focus on positive aspectsadolescent sex-role development provide model for adolescent adolescent have boarder view of sex roles Adolescent independence strivings being at infancy autonomy and connectedness interchangeable useable autonomy making decisions in own best interest autonomy and decision making self direction emotional autonomy Ausubel’s theory adolescents see dependence as a threat children accept that they are dependent on their parent satellization—accept dependency and parental power—mutual respect parents respect the child for it undervaluation- parent is rejecting parent who see kid as burden stops caring for the child overvaluation—parents overindulge child try to relive their lives in adolescent parents who try to be adolescents best friend optimal is satellization adolescent becomes capable of autonomy why is satellization “best”? mutual respect parent for child, child for parent reflect changing parent relationship learning coping skills authoritative parenting fosters transition of acting to please parents to doing what is best for the self ultimately parents become friends Peer influences What is a peer? childhood someone to play with, age is important immediate and concrete who I’m playing with now adolescent age becomes less important, groups are important adulthood experiences and roles define peers Increase in peer contact during adolescence part of it is due to school system was it always there? increasing in recent times what caused the increase—age segregation. Due to changes in: school work place family increase adolescence to each other changes in school mandatory schooling create a child zone extended age grading changes in the work place child labor laws home no longer the work place changes in the family smaller in ways discussed single parents two working parent families maternal employment all these changes segregated adolescents from adults promotes healthy social development promotes identity development satisfy affiliation needs detriments lower parental monitoring less knowledge of day to day activities not healthy for those isolated from friends less intergeneration interactions we created adolescence (and childhood) by fostering age segregation institutionalizing it via media, expected behavior, etc.
