Found in marine and fresh water sed i ments, bogs, etc. In animal digestive tracts, esp. rumen. Used in sewage treatment. Halophiles Must grow in high salt concentration (>25/0 salt). Aerobic heterotrophs. Some can carry out non-photosynthetic photophosphorylation. Evaporation ponds at the edge of the Great Salt Lake. Bright colors due to presence of halophilic bacteria.
