Application of Acidity: Separation of Mixtures C O CH3 and C O OH in ether C O CH3 C O O Na (in ether) (in water) to pH = 1 CO OH NaHCO3(aq) NaHCO3 converts benzoic acid to a water soluble salt. The benzoate salt is extracted into the aqueous phase while acetophenone remains dissolved in the organic solvent. After separation of the immiscible layers, acidification of the aqueous phase produces the pure carboxylic acid which is insoluble and precipitates out of solution.
