Completion of the east end of Florence Cathedral with a dome, as it may have been envisioned by Arnolfo di Cambio in the early 14th century. Plan of Florence Cathedral c. 1417-18 The entire layout was enlarged by Talenti, but in accordance with the original design of Anolfo di Cambio. This created the octagon upon which the future dome would have to rest; but no indication exists in the plan how a large dome of nearly 140? in diameter would be supported in clear span. N.B. Florence Cathedral is larger than Amiens Cathedral. Wooden centering for a vault at National Cathedral in Washington, D.C., using traditional construction. Note that the cut stone ribs are already in place and mortared on the centering device in this picture. Such a centering device could not be built to span a distance of 138+?. It was a huge dilemma that probably nobody in the Cathedral chapter wanted to acknowledge.
