Urbanization, is the increase in the number of people living in urban areas like metropolises Metropolitan refers to urban areas, while micropolitan refers to suburbs. An MSA is a area with 50,000 or more people in a core area measured by commuting patterns.
The three demographic characteristics of an urban population are numbers, density, heterogeneity, and interdependence. An urban population tends to be very diverse in terms of race and status, but with a larger population of younger people. There also tend to be more women in developed cities and more men in developing cities.
Suburban sprawl is the spread of suburbs. Vegas is the fastest growing city. On average, sprawl takes up 500,000 acres of farmland every year.
Fragmentation occurs when a city becomes so large that it crosses multiple county lines, meaning that it’s governing now falls under multiple jurisdictions. The problem being that none of them is able to make changes to the city as a whole and there ends up being a lot of conflict between policies in different governments as well as the needs of people in different counties.
Two effects of fragmentation are:unregulated growth and fewer city leaders
