Inventories of cattle, food and other items Writing was in form of pictographs By 300-2900 BCE further simplified pictographs into wedge shaped signs (cuneiform) Cuneiform tablets led to beginnings of writing Produced great works of Literature. Gilgamesh: antedates Iliad and Odyssey by 1500 yrs. Sumerians erected massive mud brick monuments called Ziggurats. White Temple, Uruk Layout of Sumerian cities reflected role of the gods in daily life. City temple was nucleus. 5,000 yr old While Temple at Uruk (city with 40,000 ppl)
