2004-2005: The Naming of Names CHARACTERS No one specific. CONFLICT Protagonist - Earthians who wish to exert their influence on Mars. Antagonist - Martian civilization. Climax - New names embody new restrictions as the frontier gives way to the rules of civilization. Outcome - Some settlers resist this civilizing process, as it was exactly what they sought to escape by leaving Earth for Mars. THEMES The progress of colonization, as always; but now also the struggle for control versus the pursuit of freedom. Summary Earthian names are given to supplant Martian names. As settlement of Mars continues, sophisticates come to vacation and to apply more stringent Earthian rules. However, the growing restrictions meet their resistance among the more freedom-minded men who tamed this world's frontier. Notes The naming process is similar to the process of European naming in America.
