5th scale degree or the chord built thereupon
4th scale degree or the chord built thereupon
dominant of a scale degree other than tonic (V or ii, V7 of vi, etc.)
V or V7 → I (i)
Both chords must be in root position
Tonic needs to be in soprano
(Italian, 'refrain') (1) 14th-C madrigal, closing section in different meter from preceding verses. (2) 16th- and 17th-C vocal music, instrumental intro or interlude between sung stanzas. (3) Aria or similar, instrumental passage that recurs several times. Typically, played at beginning, as interludes (modified), and again at end, stating main theme. (4) Fast mvt of a concerto, recurring thematic material played at beginning by full orchestra and repeated throughout mvt and at end.
