The initial explanation for a set of observations.
Explanations made based on many observations, well tested. Why things are the way they are.
*There is always a law and theory to every scientific principle.
A conclusion that was made based on available evidence.
*there are always other possibilities.
Two hypothesis Method
( Ho) Null Hypothesis: the possibility that there is some explanation other than the Ha.
(Ha) Research Hypothesis: the initial explanation for a set of observations.
* Reduce bias
*One hypothesis could be true
A description or representation of the system being studied.
Help scientists to visualize the workings of a system and allow them to make predictions.
The portion of the universe of interest in a scientific investigation. Ideas, concepts, descriptions which represent the system.
A systematic description of a process. Begins with a question or observation which leads to developing a predictive hypothesis. Then cycle of prediction, experiment or observation, analysis and refinement.
-measured, based on data, tools used, supports objective analysis
-assuming correlation between events, no data, opposite of empirical, testimonial *can bring up questions which leads to testing and research.
A change in the average temperature, humidity, weather, etc. of a region.
When light energy is easily transmitted into an object, but heat energy is retained.
-water vapors, methane, halocarbons (CFC's)
Climate forcing (factors that influence climate)that occur independent of human activity.
Examples: intensity of solar radiation, shape of the orbit of the earth, tilt of the earths axis, cloud cover, volcanic activity
climate forcing that result from human activity.
Examples : mining, drilling, burning of fossil fuels
Carbon dioxide gas released into the atmosphere
Long term - temperature scale
Temporary - temperatures
Believed to be a connection between two things when there really is not.
Believed to be no connection between two things when there really is.
The amount of heat retained by the Earth is dependent upon:
the composition of the atmosphere
The consensus among the vast majority of climate scientists who are actively involved in climate research is that:
climate change is happening, it is significant, and it is due to human activity.
